Abstract
Patients with cleft lip and palate present a unique challenge to the general dentist and orthodontist. Their treatment needs can be protracted and often require hospital specialist intervention. However, the general dentist and orthodontist can have an important role in facilitating care for these patients. Instigating a robust preventative oral care routine early on can create a positive experience of oral care for this group. Orthodontists can carry out treatment such as expansion, alignment to allow eruption of teeth and better access for cleaning.
Cleft lip and palate patients often require alveolar bone grafting at approximate age 9-10 years and may undergo orthognathic surgery in their late teenage years. This poster outlines the treatment pathway for CLP patients and the integral role of the dentist and orthodontist.
