Abstract
Dr. Raj will briefly explain the advantages of digitally measuring muscles and occlusion, enabling dentists to accurately register a bite for any dental procedure—from a single-tooth filling to a multi-implant–based full-mouth rehabilitation.
Dr. Raj will explain and demonstrate the importance of measuring mandibular trajectories digitally using axiography and digital facebow/3D articulators. This approach improves efficiency, precision, and communication with the dental laboratory, ultimately leading to better treatment outcomes.
This will be followed by a demonstration of how to register a bilaterally symmetrical isotonic muscle bite using a patented TENS unit, as well as how muscle activity can be measured with electromyography to confirm the accuracy of the bite.
Dr. Raj will also demonstrate the basic use of digital occlusion equipment that allows dentists to verify occlusion with micron-level precision, which is particularly significant since occlusal proprioception begins at approximately 5 microns.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the importance of incorporating digital technology into everyday orthodontic practice.
- Recognize how digital dentistry contributes not only to tooth movement but also to functional occlusion and facial aesthetics.
- Understand the use of digital 3D articulators for improved communication with dental laboratories and for treatment planning across various procedures, from single-tooth restorations to implant-supported full-mouth rehabilitations, orthodontics, and smile design.
- Appreciate the role of muscle physiology in establishing and maintaining stable occlusion.
- Differentiate between reprogrammers and deprogrammers and understand their role in occlusal management.
- Recognize the broader role of dentists as oral physicians responsible for overall oral function and health.
