Assessment and treatment of "gummy smiles"
Date: 19 November 2022 | Time: 15:15-16:00 (GST) | Location: Online Event
Abstract
Excess gingival display, commonly known as a "gummy smile" can be caused by an abnormal dental eruption (delayed passive eruption), hyperfunction of the upper lip elevator muscle, excessive vertical growth of the maxilla, over-eruption of the maxillary anterior teeth, or a combination of the above-described factors. An accurate assessment is essential to determine the best treatment options, including orthodontics, orthognatic surgery, periodontal surgery (crown lengthening), botulinum toxin injections, or a combination. This lecture will focus on the assessment of excessive gingival display and the indications for periodontal surgical management of gummy smiles.
Lecture Objectives
- Discuss etiology of excessive gingival display
- Discuss biological width and principles of gingival dimensions
- Acknowledge crown lengthening as an option for treatment of some types of "gummy smiles"
- Discuss indications and contra-indications for surgical correction of excessive gingival display
- Discuss surgical techniques for the surgical correction of "gummy smiles"
