Abstract
Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by an intense preoccupation with perceived flaws in physical appearance, which are often minor or imagined. In the dental field, this disorder poses unique challenges, as patients may present with persistent dissatisfaction regarding their oral or facial aesthetics. This lecture will provide an in-depth exploration of BDD within our society but also our profession, focusing on its prevalence, diagnostic indicators, and the ways it influences patient perceptions and demands. We will discuss how BDD can affect patient-dentist relationships, treatment outcomes, and the ethical considerations when managing individuals with this disorder.
Attendees will gain insight into recognizing signs of BDD, as early detection is critical for guiding appropriate treatment and referrals. Strategies for communication, empathy, and establishing realistic expectations will be emphasized to aid dental professionals in managing these cases effectively while prioritizing the mental well-being of their patients. By understanding the psychological aspects of BDD, dentists can foster a more holistic, patient-centered approach in their practices.
