Dr. S.A.Choonara completed his undergraduate dental degree at the University of the Witwatersrand (BDS) in 1999. During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Choonara received numerous academic awards and distinctions. He has also completed the FCD (I) examinations at the College of Medicine (S.A) and received a Dip. Odont in Orthodontics at the University of Pretoria. He completed his specialty training in Orthodontics, (MChD) Cum Laude at the University of Pretoria.

Dr. Choonara has maintained his academic interests by being constantly involved in dental education. He has taught orthodontics at an undergraduate level at both the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Pretoria. He currently serves as a Postgraduate Consultant at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Pretoria. He has had the distinction of serving as an ad-hoc reviewer for both the European Journal of Dentistry and The Angle Orthodontist.

He is a member of the South African Dental Association, having previously served as the Secretary of the Gauteng South branch, and as a member of the Ethics committee of the same branch. He has been appointed as an Associate member of the College of Dentistry of South Africa. He is also a member of the South African Society of Orthodontists, World Federation of Orthodontists and American Association of Orthodontists.

Dr. Choonara runs a successful orthodontic practice in Johannesburg, South Africa. His clinical fields of interest include Adult orthodontics, Growth modification, and Invisible aligner treatment.
