Webinar Recap: Adult Oral Health Assessment within the Scope of Practice of Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists

Oral-B and CAPP have successfully delivered an accredited webinar addressing adult oral health assessment within the scope of practice of Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists. Presented by Dr. Fiona Sandom MBE and Dr. Stephen Hancocks, the session offered a practical, scope-appropriate framework for assessing adult patients across NHS, private and mixed practice. Since 2020, CAPP has partnered with Oral-B to deliver continuous dental education webinars, accredited through CAPP, an ADA CERP Recognized Provider of Continuing Education Credits.

The session covered effective history taking, systematic extra-oral and intra-oral examination, distinguishing between dental and periodontal health and disease, and identifying the location, extent and activity of tooth surface loss and caries. The faculty also addressed translating findings into appropriate care planning and referral pathways, recognising conditions outside the scope of practice, and managing the patient presenting with pain, all while remaining compliant with General Dental Council standards.
