Complete 3D Virtual Planning of Orthodontic Treatment using CT Cone Beam and Intraoral Scanner

Lecture: Complete 3D Virtual Planning of Orthodontic Treatment using CT Cone Beam and Intraoral Scanner

The Aim is to illustrate features and advantages of complete 3D planning using CT Cone beam for orthodontic diagnosis and treatments.

A new generation of CT Cone beam for dentistry allows to visualize and analyze 3D images of jaws, teeth and soft tissues of the patient.

After a single exposure, it is possible to generate a 3D cephalometric tracing and a setup of the malocclusion. With the same system, it is also possible to generate setup models, simulating not only the movements of the crowns but especially of the roots, with respect to the real bone limits of the patient.

The intraoral scanner allows obtaining solid casts of the dental arches of the patients, by using a cad-cam technology and stereo-lithographic machines. With specific procedures and dedicated software, it is also possible to produce intraoral orthodontic appliances, without having any stone model.

On the digital setup of the malocclusion can be virtually positioned the brackets on the teeth, in order to make a customized transfer system for indirect bonding, that is very important in lingual orthodontics.

Complete 3D planning of orthodontic treatments using CT Cone Beam and intraoral scanner

Objectives: to illustrate features and advantages of complete 3D planning using CT Cone beam for orthodontic treatments. Materials e Methods: 16 patients with age between 18 and 45 years old were selected for orthodontics. New generation CT Cone beam and scanners for dentistry allow to visualize and analyze 3D images of jaws, teeth and soft tissues of the patient, after a single exposure, consenting to generate a 3D cephalometric tracing and a setup of the malocclusion too. Results: the same digital data, processed by dedicated software, allow obtaining solid casts of the dental arches of the patients, using cad-cam technology and stereolithographic machines, without neither any traditional impressions. With the same system, it is also possible to generate setup models, simulating not only the movements of the crowns but especially of the roots, with respect to the real bone limits of the patient. On the digital setup of the malocclusion can be virtually positioned the brackets on the teeth, in order to make a customized transfer system for indirect bonding or to construct different appliances.

The new possibilities offered by CT Cone beam and intra-oral scanner allow making a full and accurate 3D planning for orthodontic treatments, from diagnosis to indirect bonding, using a single x-ray exposure for the patients.

This conference will give the background of orthodontic digital technology and provide the current "state-of-the-art" of 3D orthodontics.

Learning objectives:

Full and accurate diagnosis of orthodontic treatments

  3D planning for orthodontic treatments

  Less storage space
