Nowadays, smile design becomes more popular treatment option in dentistry and often the patient’s demands are challenging or even unrealistic. There are numbers of chief complaints that patients seek for the improvement of their smiles. Malocclusion due to dental or skeletal discrepancy and severe gingival show, known as gummy smile is an example. The clinician should be knowledgeable to identify each patient’s chief complaints and treat it appropriately.
This presentation will be focus on the classification, diagnosis and treatment options for patients with gummy smile. It will be discussed whether the gummy smile case should be done with orthodontic procedure or orthognatic surgery or periodontic treatment prior to restorative procedure and focus on periodontal treatment, i.e. esthetic crown lengthening. Using the guidelines presented in the literatures, it will provide the clinician a clear judgment for gummy smile with periodontal surgery using piezo surgery.
